Smyths Toys Superstores is an Irish multinational chain provider of children's toys and entertainment products with over 110 shops throughout Ireland and the UK, which is owned by the Smyth family.
The company is headquartered in Lyrr Building 1 in the Mervue Business Park, Galway, Ireland, and it has additional offices in Belfast and London.[2]
History
The company is run by four brothers, and it was founded in Claremorris, County Mayo on 23 December 1986 .[3] It is Ireland's largest toy retailer.[4] The Globe Retail Park in Naas, Ireland was subject to a fire on 27 July 2016 that destroyed one of the shop's stockrooms, causing the shop to temporarily close, with operations being moved until repairs could be made.[5][6]
Stores and subsidiaries
In total, Smyths operates over 110 shops: 21 shops in Ireland, 7 in Northern Ireland and 83 in Great Britain.[7] Smyths Toys UK Limited is a wholly owned subsidairy of the company[8][9]
Expansion to Central Europe
On 21 April 2018, Smyths announced that it will acquire Toys "R" Us stores in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.[10]
