Skyline High School is a public high school in Longmont, Colorado, United States. It is part of the St. Vrain Valley School District. Current enrollment at the school is approximately 1260 students, in grades 9-12. The school mascot is the Falcon, and the school colors are red and yellow.

History

The school was built in 1978 to accommodate the growing population on the east side of Longmont. The name "Skyline" was chosen by students.

Athletics

SHS is a member of the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA). Skyline High School competes in Class 4A athletics. The school has won multiple state championships in baseball, boys' and girls' basketball, football, women's golf, swimming, track and field, and volleyball. The varsity plays their home games at Everly Montgomery Field, located on the campus of crosstown rivals Longmont High School.

Academics

Skyline High School is home to the only STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program and the VPA (Visual and Performing Arts) Academy in the St. Vrain Valley School District. Students can earn both STEM and VPA certificates upon graduation, the first student to do so being Michael Greenlee in 2015. Even though SHS has consistently scored low on the Colorado Student Assessment Program (CSAP; a series of tests given to all 9th and 10th grade students that cover Math, Science, Reading and Writing), the school has seen an improvement in all categories in recent years.

Skyline High offers an Honors Certification Program that provides enrichment in various curricular areas. Students who meet set requirements in honors courses, extra-curricular activities, and community service requirements, along with maintaining a GPA of 3.25, are issued an Honors Certificate.

SHS also offers a unique partnership with Front Range Community College of Longmont that allows students to take college-level classes at the high school for both high school and college credit at no cost. Courses include Physical Anthropology, Art History, Astronomy, Macroeconomics, English Composition, French Language, Music Appreciation, Public Speaking, General Psychology.

Closely related to both the STEM and VPA programs, Skyline has an active computer science program.

Vance Brand Civic Auditorium

Skyline High School houses the Vance Brand Civic Auditorium (VBCA).[1] It was completed in 1979 with a capacity of over 1300 in the upper and lower seating. VBCA is named for Longmont's famed astronaut Vance Brand, and is the cultural venue for many productions. It is the only theater in the district with state-of-the-art acoustics and lighting that can be used on a daily basis by students (for classes, school plays, or assemblies), as well as by outside performances like those of the Longmont Symphony Orchestra.
