Sir John Philipps, 4th Baronet
Sir John Philipps (c.1666 – 5 January 1737) of Picton Castle, Pembrokeshire was a Welsh landowner, a philanthropist and major figure of his time in educational and religious reform.[1] He was a Member of Parliament for two Welsh constituencies.[2]
Philipps was the eldest surviving son of Sir Erasmus Philipps, 3rd Baronet, by his second wife, Catherine Darcy.[2] He was educated at Westminster School, and matriculated at Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1682.[3] He succeeded his father in 1697.
He was returned as Member of Parliament for Pembroke Boroughs in 1696 and held the seat until 1703. He was returned as MP for Haverfordwest in 1718 but retired in 1722 on account of poor eyesight. [4]
From a nonconformist background, Philipps became one of the prominent early members of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge,[5] and the main promoter of the charity school movement in Wales.[6] He was a patron of Griffith Jones, and of two editions of the Welsh Bible.[7]
Philipps died in 1737 and was succeeded by his eldest son Erasmus
