Sruthi Hariharan is an Indian film actress and producer from Kerala who predominantly appears in Kannada and Malayalam films. After doing theatre and working as a background dancer in films, she began a career in acting. She debuted in the 2012 Malayalam film Cinema Company. Her first break into the Kannada cinema industry came with the film Lucia and then was followed up by her lead performance in Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu. She received critical acclaim and recognition for her work in both these films. In 2016, Sruthi Hariharan founded a production house, Kalathmika. The main ideology behind Kalathmika’s inception is to create art that can drive change. The production house is based out of Bengaluru and is currently in the works to produce its (tentative) first feature film Tesla. Two short films Rita and The Last Kannadiga have been produced so far. Both films have an underlying tone that addresses social issues.

Early life

Sruthi Hariharan was born in a Tamil family in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala[1] and was raised in Bangalore, Karnataka. She did her schooling from Sishu Griha Montessori and High School. She graduated with a BBM degree from Christ University. She is trained in Bharatanatyam and contemporary dance and apart from her mother tongue Tamil, she is fluent in Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi and can understand Telugu.[2]

She was interested in cultural activities and was a part of the cultural team at Christ College and later went on to do theatre.[3] She joined choreographer Imraan Sardariya's dance troupe and worked in the Kannada film industry as assistant choreographer and background dancer.[3] She was a background dancer in the industry for three years and featured in a number of songs.[4]

Career

Shruti's film career started off with, Cinema Company, a Malayalam film.. She had shot for two more Malayalam films. She shot for two more Malayalam films, Thekku Thekkoru Desathu and Call Me @.[5] In Francis's Call Me @ she played the role of an IT girl, while in Nandu's, Thekku Thekkoru Desathu she played a journalist.[6] She landed the lead role in the Kannada film Lucia by Pawan Kumar. She played two characters in the film — one of a lower middle-class girl and the other of a film actress —[7] and dubbed for herself for the first time.[8] Lucia was critically acclaimed and was later remade in several Indian languages.[9] Shruti's performance was well received and she was featured in Rediff's "Most Impressive Kannada Movie Debuts, 2013" list.[10] Later that year she appeared in another Kannada film Dyavre. Her performance in film received rave reviews from critics.[11] She was offered a role in director Harsha's Bhajarangi featuring Shivraj Kumar in the lead, but she could not commit herself to the film.[12]

In 2014, she was seen as the love interest of Srinagara Kitty's character in Jacob Varghese's road movie Savaari 2. Her next release was her first Tamil film Nerungi Vaa Muthamidathe by Lakshmy Ramakrishnan.[13][14] She was next seen in A. P. Arjun's Raate, which she signed even before the release of Lucia.[8] Her character in the film was that of a traditional village girl.[5]

In her next feature, she was simultaneously shooting for the Kannada film Sipaayi directed by Rajath Mayee,[15] and the Tamil independent art film Nila. She has also signed another Kannada film, Godhi Banna Sadharna Mykattu by Hemanth Rao,[16] and Balaji Sakthivel's next directorial Ra Ra Rajasekhar.[17]

Godhi Banna Sadharna Mykattu went on to do very well both in terms of box office and critics. Her portrayal of Dr. Sahana made her the talk of the town. She appeared next in Maadha Mathu Manasi, produced by Mano Murthy. She achieved further success in the Kannada film industry through her performances in B.S. Pradeep Varma’s Urvi, followed by Beautiful Manasugalu. She struck a balance between commercial and performance oriented roles by featuring in films of diverse genres. She next appeared in the Kannada multi-starrer Happy New Year, in which she played the role of a bedridden patient, ailing from psoriasis. After featuring in the bilingual film Vismaya(Kannada) which was titled Nibunan in Tamil, she followed it up with the box office success Tarak, opposite Kannada actor Darshan. The Telugu version of Vismaya, titled Kurukshetra is yet to release. Continuing her foray into Tamil and Malayalam industries, she was part of Bejoy Nambiar’s film Solo, opposite actor Dulquer Salmaan. Kannada film Upendra Mathe Baa with veterans Upendra and Prema, Aarya Maurya with National Award winner Sanchari Vijay are her upcoming release. As part of the new wave in Kannada films, the multilingual release Humble Politician Nograj with Danish Sait and Sumukhi Suresh is in the making. She is currently filming an untitled Telugu project directed by Chaitanya KN
