Seán Ó Ruadháin

Seán Ó Ruadháin (or Ruan) was an Irish-language writer who was born in Gweesalia (Gaoth Sáile) in County Mayo on 20 February 1883 and died in Dublin on 22 June 1966. He was brought up bilingually but heard mostly Irish in his childhood. His first literary attempts in Irish were published in 1907, but his most important work was the novel Pádhraic Mháire Bhán, the story of a young boy's life in Mayo. He also translated Charles Dickens's novel David Copperfield into Irish. His opinions on what constitutes good Irish, originally published in Feasta, the monthly of the Irish language movement, have been recently issued in book form under the title Ceart nó Mícheart? ("Correct or incorrect?"). He was a typical old-school Gaeltacht writer describing traditional life, mostly read because of his rich native dialect.
