Sandra Nankoma also previously known as Sandy Soul is a Ugandan recording artist, singer-songwriter, composer and performer of Afro-soul and jazz music and an actress.[2] She landed into the music industry when she collaborated with Sylvester Kabombo on a hip hop song, "Fumbiro" in 2009. She later released her hit singles, “"Mercedes" and "Kaddugala".[3]

Career

Sandra started to sing at a tender age, where she developed a love for singing and At 4 years she started doing imitations of Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. Then at 10 started to do Karaoke competitions at primary school. In high School at the age of 14, she joined Scripture Union fellowship for a grand total of 2 days. She joined the Fellowship choir at her new school, where she quickly became one of the leaders of the scripture Union choir, for another 2 years. She is an almunus of Uganda Christian University Mukono where she got a Bachelors degree in industrial Fine Art and Design with a major in sculpture.

Sandra started doing music professionally in 2013 when she performed at the Bayimba Festival of the Arts, following her collaboration with Sylvester Kabombo on a hip hop song, "Fumbiro". She released her first single titled Season. She has since recorded a number of other songs including Kaddugala, Musaiza Wei'ka, Babylon and Mecedes which was featured on RNW ‘s My Song program on YouTube[4] as well as collaborating with so many other Ugandan musicians including Cyno Mc, Slyvester, DJ PP, Keejay Freak and many others. Sandra Nankoma has performed on a number of stages in Uganda and festivals like Bayimba Festival of the Arts [5] Milege World Music Festival organized by Milege, Pearl Rhythm Festival, World Music Day celebrations[6] and so many others.

In 2013, she started her own band, performing as Sandy Soul Toured Africa performing in different Cities, Nairobi, Arusha, Abidjan, Kigali including Europe, Paris. In 2016, she performed at that MASA Arts Festival in Ivory Coast, as a part of Afroman Spice, a Female theatre company she co-founded, that does plays for social change, with a bias towards women issues,she performed at Ubumuntu Festival in Kigali (with Afroman Spice) and at the Kigali Up Festival as Sandy Soul.

In 2017 she did a music residence in Nairobi called the Soul Train where she got to collaborated with quite a number of East African and South African Artists like Jojo Abot (Ghana), Blinky Bill (Kenya), Jackie Manyelope, Prisca Ojwang, DJ kampire and many more.

Sandra Nankoma is also an Award Winner of Visa Pour La Creation,that awards the best African and Caribbean Artists of the year. In 2018, she released her first debut studio album, Ye'nze which was mastered and released in both Uganda and France. She has since gone on tour with this Album and Still on tour [7][8]

Acting career

Sandra Nankoma has acted in a long line of theatre plays and musicals. She is a former member of a drama group, Afroman Spice which is made up three women Sandra Nankoma, Rashida Namulondo and Linda Nabasa. The group's plays, musicals and poetry are about social issues affecting Uganda and Africa at large.[9] Sandy Soul has performed with the group in Uganda, Kenya and Ivory Coast.[10]

Personal life

Sandy Soul was born Sandra Nakoma in Mukono district, where she was also raised. Because of her dark skin, she was bullied in school and she later stood up against social discrimination basing on skin tone, for which she even released a song Kaddugala to support all black women against discrimination.[11] She holds a degree in Industrial Fine Art from Makerere University.
