Samuel "Sammy" Blais (born June 17, 1996) is a Canadian professional ice hockey forward. He is currently playing for the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted by the Blues in the sixth round, 176th overall, in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

Playing career

Blais played junior hockey in his native Quebec with Trois-Rivières Estacades and Lévis Commandeurs in the QMAAA. He was originally selected 129th overall in the 2013 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Entry Draft by the Victoriaville Tigres. After his rookie season split between the Commandeurs and the Tigres, Blais was chosen in his first year of eligibility by the St. Louis Blues, 176th overall, in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.[1]

While leading the Tigres in scoring in his final junior season in 2015–16, Blais was signed to a three-year entry-level contract with the St. Louis Blues on November 14, 2015.[2] He produced 40 points in 30 games before he was dealt by the Tigres to the Charlottetown Islanders on December 20, 2015.[3] Blais continued his offensive output in leading the Islanders to finish with a combined 82 points in just 63 games. On the Islanders top scoring line he helped the Islanders advance to the second round, posting 19 points in 12 games.

Embarking on his professional career, Blais was assigned by the St. Louis Blues to AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves, for the 2016–17 season. He carried over his scoring ability from junior to lead the Wolves rookies and place second overall on the team with 26 goals in 75 games.

After attending the Blues training camp the following summer, Blais with a strong showing was potentially earmarked to make NHL roster for the 2017–18 season.[4] He was however among the Blues final cuts, and was re-assigned to open the season with the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL.[5] After two games with the Rampage, Blais received his first recall to the NHL on October 14, 2017.[6] He travelled cross-country to make his debut that night in a 2–1 defeat to the Tampa Bay Lightning.[7] In his third game he registered his first NHL point, an assist on Robert Bortuzzo's game-winning goal, in a 4–3 decision over the Colorado Avalanche on October 19, 2017.[8]
