Salton Sea geothermal energy

There are eleven operating geothermal power plants operating near the Salton Sea in southern California.[1] The lake is in a region that has a high level of geothermal energy, with an estimated 2,400 megawatts (MW) of power available or expected to become accessible as the lake shrinks.[1] About 450 MW is generated by the existing power plants, ten of which are owned by CalEnergy and one by EnergySource.[1][2]

An Australian company, Controlled Thermal Resources, plans to construct a new geothermal plant in the late 2010s with a power generation capacity of 280 MW, expandable up to 750 MW.[2]
