Sakkō

Sakkō (先笄) is a Japanese hairstyle. It is worn by maiko today, but was worn in the later period of the Edo period and in the Meiji Period by young married women. Maiko wear it during a ceremony called Erikae, which marks their graduation from maiko to geiko. Maiko use black wax to stain their teeth as well. Crane and tortoiseshell ornaments are added as kanzashi. The style is twisted in many knots, and is quite striking and elaborate.
