Sagufta Yasmin Emily is a Bangladesh Awami League politician and Member of Parliament from Munshiganj.[1]

Biography

Sagufta Yasmin Emily was arrested on 25 August 2004 at an anti-government rally of women opposition leader during strikes called by Bangladesh Awami League. The strike was called after the 15 August 2004 Dhaka grenade attack on opposition leader in Parliament and the chief of Bangladesh Awami League, Sheikh Hasina. The attack took place when the government was led by Bangladesh Nationalist party led by four party alliance. Along with Emily some other female leaders of Awami League were arrested, who were dragged into police vans which left them partially stripped of clothes.[2] Sagufta Yasmin Emily was elected to parliament from Munshiganj District in January 2009 as a candidate of Bangladesh Awami League.[3] She was appointed as a whip in the parliament of Bangladesh by President Iajuddin Ahmed in 24 January 2009.[4]

Sagufta Yasmin Emily was reelected to parliament on January 2014.[5] On 8 march 2010 at a roundtable organized by Transparency International Bangladesh, she described the religiously motivated terrorism as an obstacle for the advancement for women in Bangladesh.[6] At the Padma Bridge—New Lifeline of Development organized by BSRM and The Daily Star on 10 January 2016, where she talked about the effects of river erosion in her constituency. She told the panel how the local government had to use millions of takas worth of sandbags to prevent erosion.[7] In July 2016 she accused some Non-Government Organisations of being involved with activities against the state and called for the government to take action against them. State Minister for Social Welfare Nuruzzaman Ahmed said the government will monitor their activities and that the government was willing to take "drastic action" if the situation demands it.[8]
