History

The Sacramento Theatre Company is the oldest theater troupe in Sacramento, The Sacramento Theatre Company was originally formed in 1942 to entertain locally stationed troops during World War II. STC was originally called the Sacramento Civic Repertory Theatre, until they opened the doors to their first theater home in 1949, The Eaglet Theatre. The Eaglet was built from canvas and wood to match its much older twin, the famed Eagle Theatre from the California Gold Rush period. The new theater benefited from the patronage of newspaper executive and heiress Eleanor McClatchy, an enthusiastic supporter of theater and the arts.

Today

Today, the Sacramento Theater Company calls the H Street Theatre Complex home. The new stages are located on H and 15th street in Midtown Sacramento, the cultural heart of the city. Staging plays in three performance spaces, STC as it is known, has been instrumental in the budding careers of such regional theater professionals as playwright Richard Hellesen and director Tim Ocel and international superstar Tom Hanks.
