Robert Clarence Irwin (born 1 December 2003)[1] is an Australian photographer, conservationist and television personality. He stars on his own channel on Australia Zoo TV, Robert's Real Life Adventures. He co-hosted the Discovery Kids Channel TV series Wild But True and co-created the book series Robert Irwin: Dinosaur Hunter.

Early life

Robert Irwin was born on 1 December 2003, the second of two children and only son of late Australian television personality, zookeeper and environmentalist Steve Irwin and of Terri Irwin and the grandson of the naturalist and animal conservationist Robert "Bob" Irwin. Robert is a dual citizen of Australia (through his father) and the United States (through his mother). He is of English and Irish ancestry, with abundance of Irish ancestry on his father's side. Both Robert and his sister Bindi Irwin were homeschooled at Australia Zoo.[2]

During a public show on 2 January 2004, Irwin's father, Steve, carried Robert, then one month old, in his arm while hand-feeding a chicken carcass to a 3.8-metre (12 ft 6 in) saltwater crocodile. Robert Irwin was close to the crocodile, as the two attended day care together, and comparisons were made in the press to Michael Jackson's dangling his son outside a German hotel window.[3] The incident prompted the Queensland government to change its crocodile-handling laws, banning children and untrained adults from entering crocodile enclosures.[4]

When Robert was almost three years old, Steve died from injuries and blood loss in a stingray attack.

Career

In 2009, Irwin had a cameo appearance in Free Willy: Escape from Pirate's Cove.[5] In 2012, Irwin appeared alongside his mother and sister in a TV series entitled Steve Irwin's Wildlife Warriors, which earned him a 2013 Logie Award nomination for Most Popular New Male Talent.[6] In 2014 and 2015, Irwin co-hosted a TV series named Wild But True on Discovery Kids Channel.[5] The show was later nominated for an International Emmy Kids Award in the factual category in 2016.[7]

In 2013, Irwin released a series of books, titled Dinosaur Hunter, which he co-authored with Lachlan Creag and Jack Wells.[8][9]

In 2015, he appeared as a guest on British wildlife series Ten Deadliest Snakes in the episode focused on Australia's venomous snakes. He guided presenter Nigel Marven in the billabong of Australia Zoo to look for a red-bellied black snake.

Irwin was runner-up in the junior category of the 2016 Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year competition.[10][11]

On 16 February 2017, Irwin made his late-night television debut when he appeared on NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.[12] He presented an African dwarf crocodile, a screaming armadillo, a snake, and a sloth to the host Jimmy Fallon.[13][14][15] He came back on 20 April 2017, presenting a scorpion, two baby black bears, two legless lizards, a binturong, and a toucan (more specifically a green aracari).[16][17][18] Irwin appeared again, on 7 June 2017, this time presenting a baby North American badger, a baby alligator snapping turtle and a 100-year-old one, a baby kangaroo(Joey)[19], and three baby warthogs.[20] He also appeared on the 23 November 2017 episode of The Tonight Show, as well as the 25 January 2018 and 2 May 2018 episodes.

On 6 April 2017 Robert Irwin was invested as a member and ambassador of Scouts Australia, formalising a partnership between the organisation and Australia Zoo. The aim of the partnership is to encourage Australia's young people to become involved with wilderness and conservation.[21]

On Australia Zoo TV, Irwin appears on his own channel.[16]
