Richard A. Moran is a noted San Francisco based business leader, venture capitalist, bestselling author[1] and president emeritus of Menlo College. He is best known for his series of humorous business books beginning with bestselling, Never Confuse a Memo with Reality that started the genre of "Business Bullet Books."

Biography

Moran was the tenth president of Menlo College, a private four year college located in the heart of Silicon Valley. He is the first former president there given the "Emeritus" status for his contributions. Moran previously served as CEO and vice chairman at Accretive Solutions, a national professional services firm with a focus on accounting, information technology and outsourcing. Moran has served on the boards of Glu Mobile Games, Winery Exchange, and Mechanics Bank among others. A management role in the early days at ATARI (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari)was the beginning of his career in the Silicon Valley. Since then he has been involved in companies big and small, with success and failure and witnessed the growth and change of innovation.

Rich Moran also serves on the management team of the Irish Technology Leadership Group, is a partner at SVG Partners, and is a member of the Global Irish Network, a network launched in 2010 comprising 350 of the most senior Irish and Irish connected business people from over 40 countries.

In the public or not-for-profit sector he serves on The Council of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, is the chair of the audit committee at the Noyce Foundation, the National Board of Visitors at the Indiana University School of Education. Previously he served as a regent at Saint Ignatius College Prep and Chair of Project Open Hand, both in San Francisco. Moran serves also on the Accountability Structures Expert Panel for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN); the policy making group that coordinates the Domain Name System and Internet Protocol addresses.

Corporate governance is a professional focus. He works often with corporate boards to improve effectiveness and clarify roles. He serves on the board of the Silicon Valley Chapter of the National Association of Corporate Directors. Higher education guest lecture assignments include Stanford Graduate School of Business, NYU Stern School, Santa Clara University, University of California, Berkeley, and others.

The Moran Family owns and operates a vineyard and winery in Knights Valley in Sonoma County. Moran chronicles the development of the vineyard and restoring an old house in his column "In the Country" which has been running in wine country newspapers since 1997.

He earned an A.B. at Rutgers College; M.S. at Indiana University; and Ph.D. at Miami University, Oxford Ohio. While at Rutgers, he competed in cross country and track and field and broke one school record. He is a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity.

Writing

Moran has written eight business books. His latest book The Thing About Work: Showing Up and Other Important Matters: A Worker's Manual was released in October 2016. His work has been translated into eight languages, one was converted into a calendar with daily reminders and distributed widely on college campuses as a leadership manual.

Rich Moran is a radio personality featured on KCBS Radio in San Francisco. He is The host of "In the Workplace", a program that discusses workplace issues and airs weekly to over a million listeners. Topics include: Dogs at Work; Working from Home and Playing Hooky. He is a frequent speaker on achieving success as well as workplace issues and has appeared on NPR, Bloomberg TV and other media outlets.
