Reginald Davies (30 September 1897 – 7 January 1977) was an English professional football wing half who made over 330 appearances in the Football League for Portsmouth, Brentford and Mansfield Town.[2]

Career

Early years

A wing half, Davies began his career in non-league football with local side Sutton Town.[1]

Portsmouth

Davies began his league career at Division Three South side Portsmouth, captaining the side which rose from the basement to Division One in four seasons.[2] He departed Fratton Park in the summer of 1927,[2] after making 216 appearances and scoring three goals for Pompey.[3]

Brentford

Aged almost 30, Davies dropped back down to the Division Three South to sign for Brentford in the summer of 1927 for a £250 fee.[2] Despite his age, he was a virtual ever-present for the team at wing half and played in all 42 league games of the 1929–30 season,[4] when the Bees won all 21 home games at Griffin Park to set a record which has never been equalled.[5] He dropped down into the reserves in 1931, helping the side win the 1931–32 London Combination.[2] Davies left the Bees in the summer of 1932, having made 123 appearances for the club.[2]

Mansfield Town

Davies returned to his native Nottinghamshire and saw out his career with a spell at Division Three North side Mansfield Town.[2]
