Rachel Ann Mills is a Professor of Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton. She is a marine geochemist who works on hydrothermal deposit formation and alteration.

Early life and education

Mills studied oceanography at the University of Southampton, graduating in 1988.[1] She earned her PhD at the University of Cambridge.[1] She was a member of the first cohort of graduate students to complete PhDs in oceanography at Cambridge.[2]

Research and career

Mills remained as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Cambridge.[1] She was appointed as a lecturer at the University of Southampton in 1993.[1]

Mills works with biologists and microbiologists to understand how microbial and macrobiotic communities interact with seafloor mineral deposits.[1] She used hydrothermal sediment geochemistry to understand historic Pacific ocean ventilation during the Pleistocene.[1] To evaluate carbon sequestration in the Southern Ocean, Mills uses proxies for sedimentary processes.[1]

She is a member of the UK Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research.[3] In 2016 she visited Singapore with the British Council.[2] Mills developed a massive open online course with FutureLearn "Exploring Our Oceans".[4] Later that year she was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences at the University of Southampton.[1][5] In 2017 the University of Southampton were awarded a royal warrant to establish a regius professorship in Ocean Sciences. She is also Head of Ocean and Earth Sciences at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton.[2] She oversees the graduate school in the faculty and is a member of the Natural Environment Research Council Training Advisory Board.[6] She is part of the collaborative research project UK Geotraces.[7]

In 2018 she appeared on BBC Radio 4's The Life Scientific.[8]
