Queens Technical High School is a public career and technical education secondary school located in Long Island City, NY. The school has an enrollment of 1,513 students and serves grades 9-12.[3] A new wing, completed in 2005, added a cafeteria, library, gymnasium, and additional classrooms.[4] The following career and technical programs are available to students: Careers in Business, Electrical Design and Installation, Plumbing Design and Technology, Pre-Engineering Electronic Technology, Computer Technology and Information Systems, Cisco networking, Cosmetology Careers/Salon Management, Barbering, and Graphic Design.[5] The school is operated by the New York City Department of Education.

Location

The school is situated between residential and industrial areas in Long Island City, Queens. The main entrance for all students, staff, and visitors is located on the corner of 38th Street and 47th Avenue. LaGuardia Community College is six blocks to the west, Aviation High School is one block to the west, and Queens Boulevard is one block to the north.

Demographics

Of the 1,513 students enrolled in the 2017-2018 school year, 62.52% of students were male, while 37.48% were female. 77.99% of the students were Hispanic or Latino, 12.00% were Asian or Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander, 5.68% were White, 4.89% were Black or African American, and 0.07% were multi-racial.[6]

Athletics

Queens Technical High School competes in the Public Schools Athletic League "B" division, with the exception of the varsity wrestling team that competes in the "A" division. Offerings include boys baseball, boys basketball, girls basketball, boys bowling, girls bowling, boys handball, boys soccer, girls soccer, girls softball, girls flag football, girls volleyball, and boys wrestling in "A".[7] In 2009, the Queens Vocational boys soccer team captured the league championship by defeating Thomas Edison High School 3-2 on Randall's Island.[8]

Robotics

Queens Technical High School is best known for their award winning FIRST Robotics Team 1796, the RoboTigers. The RoboTigers were first created in 2006 competing initially in the 2006 SBPLI Regional. The team originally consisted of around 6 members with the Lead Mentor Mr. Anthony Ali. After a bumpy start from 2006 to 2009 the RoboTigers won their first regional competition in 2009 (New York City Regional) alongside two New Jersey teams. The next regional they won was in 2012 (SBPLI Regional), and then again in 2013 (SBPLI Regional), and then again in 2015 (New York City Regional). Along the way they also received many awards recognizing their talents.

One of the most prestigious awards was award to the RoboTigers in 2016 during the SBPLI Regional. They were the receipts of the Chairman's Award, which is described by FIRST Robotics as "The most prestigious award at FIRST, it honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the purpose and goals of FIRST." Their efforts in raising STEM in their community is not going unnoticed. They are just getting started with spreading STEM to every single corner of New York City.

That wasn't the end of the RoboTigers. After falling short at both regional they attended in 2017, they went to become the champions of the Carson Sub-Division in St. Louis, MO. Going against 65 other teams from around the world. After becoming the champions of the Sub-Division they were slated to compete against the winners from the other 5 divisions. The RoboTigers alliance, consisting of 125, 5687, and 597, went on to beating two other Sub-Division Champions and came in to be the fourth alliance worldwide.
