Puthenvelikkara is a village in the Paravur Taluk Ernakulam district of Kerala, India. Chalakkudy River merges with the Periyar River at Elenthikkara in the village of Puthenvelikkara. Puthenvelikkara is on the banks of rivers Periyar, Chalakudy and Kottapuram lagoon. It has been a centre of agricultural production with paddy fields.

Location

The village is situated in the road connecting Paravur with Mala. The nearest town is North Paravur 5 km away which is connected through Puthanvelikkara Station kadavu.

Blessed with scenic splendour, Puthenvelikkara on the banks of rivers Periyar, Chalakudy and Kottapuram Kayal was born out of the influence of natural forces like high tide.

History

Fossils of sea life, wooden remnants and other debris that came up during digging the town’s earth support the theory of its origin. Similar land formed due to high tides can be found at various places in the small state of Kerala. Years ago forign ships were launched the north side of puthenvelikkara. Now the place known as Kappalkulam.

Geography

Puthenvelikkara is situated in Ernakulam District of Central Kerala in India.The village is 43.8 km North of Kochi and 21 km west of Cochin International Airport. Territory of Puthenvelikkara covers an area of 19.87 km2. Puthenvelikkara share its borders with Poyya and Methala villages in North, Karumalloor and Kunnukara villages in South, Prakkadavu, Kunnukara and Kuzhur villages in East, and Chendamangalam, Vadakkekara and Methala villages in West. The ancient belief is that, the formation of village is a result of high-tide (Veliyettam in Malayalam) and this belief is proven by the existence of fossils of aquatic beings found in the village.

Puthenvelikkara is surrounded by water: rivers and lagoon. It resulted in the formation of fertile lands suited for cultivation. The main source of income for people comes from agriculture. The provinces or wards such as Kurisingal, Kurumba thuruth, Thuruthipuram, Thuruthur, Panjipalla, Manancheri Kunnu, Karottukara, Vattekattu Kunnu, Keezhuppadam, Kodikuthiya Kunnu, Elanthikara, Kanakkankadav, Cherukadappuram, Thelathuruth, Kozhithuruth, Chowkakadav, Malavana, Stationkadav and some small islands, together form the village of Puthenvelikkara. Puthenvelikkara was fame in Paravur for its numerous Kunnu\Hills, but today they are destroyed for productive purposes in Paravur.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, Puthenvelikkara had a population of 32213 with 15658 males and 16555 females. Peaceful coexistence of Hindu and Christian communities is making this village a model for the whole state. The village once had a few Jewish families settled here, has none left at the moment. Notably, there is no Muslims live in this village.
