Portrait of William the Silent

The Rijksmuseum version

Portrait of William the Silent is the title of three paintings of William the Silent age 46 by Adriaen Thomasz Key, produced around 1579 in Antwerp. The works fall into two versions, all derived from a lost original. They are now in the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, the Mauritshuis and the Rijksmuseum. The Rijksmuseum version is considered to be the best of the three and the closest to the lost original work. The Mauritshuis version omits the shoulder and hand and shows a more severe facial expression.
