Phnom Penh Crown Football Club is a football club from Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Formerly the team were called Samart United, Hello United, Phnom Penh United and Phnom Penh Empire before establishing their current name, Phnom Penh Crown FC in 2009. The club has won 6 Cambodian League titles.
History
In 2000 Samart United were founded, with sponsorship from Samart Communications. After undergoing a number of name changes over the past decade, this was the forerunner of the Phnom Penh Crown team that exists today.
Joining forces with the Khmer Empire team, another new moniker was adopted, Phnom Penh Empire, for the 2007 season, in which the team finished in third place behind the league champions Nagacorp.
A disappointing showing in the 2009 end of season play-offs saw the club, now called Phnom Penh Crown after their latest sponsors Crown Casino, finish in fourth spot, despite ending the regular season in top spot.
In 2010, Crown captured the Metfone Cambodia League Premier title for the third time, beating Preah Khan Reach 4–3 in the play-off final.
In 2014 Crown clinched their 5th Championship with a 1–0 win over NagaCorp, losing just two matches in their league campaign.
They retained their league title in 2015, defeating Nagaworld in the final on penalties.[1]
Rivalries
Crown's biggest rival in domestic competition has long been Nagaworld FC. Matches between the two teams was dubbed by fans the "Cambodian El Classico", and for good reasons. It is one of Cambodian football's longest standing feud, between two of the country's undisputed titans. The competition between the teams was once considered the biggest football rivalry in Cambodia, but after Naga's long drought of domestic success and the drastic rise of Boeung Ket FC, Cambodian football found a new rivalry. Even though PPC Vs Naga is still a special match for Crown supporters, PPC Vs Beoungket has become the new staple among Cambodian football rivalries. The match dubbed "Cambodian Classic" often produces intense football and even more intense dramas fueled by emotions and desires to win. It is almost always the most anticipated match of the year (even among neutral fans).
