Satan's Slave (Indonesian: Pengabdi Setan) is a 1980 Indonesian horror film directed by Sisworo Gautama Putra. It has achieved cult status among fans of Asian horror films; principally because it has been unavailable for many years except as an obscure Japanese VHS pressing with no English subtitles. In 2006, Brentwood Home Video, a specialist US label, released an uncut print on DVD for retail release as part of its Eastern Horror series.[1] Among Western fans It is notable for being one of the few classic horror films to substitute Christian or Buddhist themes for Muslim beliefs. The film bears a resemblance in plot to Don Coscarelli's 1979 film Phantasm. A remake, directed by Joko Anwar, was released on September 28, 2017 and it was a box office success and was met with critical acclaim.
Plot
A wealthy family away from religion gets caught when the mother dies. The mother, Mawarti, abandoned a father named Munarto who cared only for business life, as well as a quiet son named Tomi and a daughter named Rita who was addicted to the party, with them a servant named Pak Karto who was religiously and sickly. On the first night after Mawarti's death, Tomi meets the mother despite not speaking. The next day, from the advice of his friend Tomi visited an astrologer who said that his whole family was in great danger and would kill them all. Then the fortune-teller advised him to strengthen himself with black magic.
Since then Tomi became strange and reserved because he concentrated deeply into black magic. Rita's girlfriend, Herman, says that 40 days after the death of a person, the person is still around his house. A housekeeper, Darminah was sent from the father's acquaintance. That night, after the party, Rita starts to find herself frightened by seeing a kuntilanak, while Herman says that Darminah is not a good man and will talk about it tomorrow when going to a shaman's house. Then, Mr. Karto who began to frequently felt Darminah's strange and suspicious behavior. Tomi, was advised by a kiai who met him at a bookstore to begin performing the prayers. When he wanted to do it, a kuntilanak figure approached him and told him to stop it. The same night, Mr. Karto who was on guard locked in a warehouse and the morning found Tomi, his corpse was hung. By noon, Herman, who had just left a place, nearly bumped into a woman and made himself run over by a truck. The woman who was almost hit was Darminah. That night, Toni and Rita talked, agreeing that the ghosts in their homes had to be removed. When Rita came out, he was chased by a undead Herman who chased him until Rita was helped by Darminah.
The next morning, Rita expressed herself and Tomi to call a dukun to her father. His father agreed and called a shaman. Hired shamans, attacked by broken glass and jumbled flower petals, Rita, Tomi, and Munarto saw the dukun's head pelted by a spinning chandelier. When all was done, Darminah sneaking away to a place, Tomi followed him. Darminah goes to the cemetery and behind him is Herman and Pak Karto who is like a zombie, Darminah raises Mawarti to be told to kill his own family. Tomi was caught peeking and being chased, fortunately he managed to escape and get home, he immediately warned Munarto and Rita of Darminah. Rita believed, but Munarto did not and with them went to Darminah's room which was Darminah already there. The next day Rita and Tomi recklessly dig Mawarti's grave and still see her body is there. Upon his return, Rita, Tomi, and Munarto were harassed by the undead. Rita is harassed by Herman, Tomi is harassed by Mr. Karto, Munarto is harassed by Mawarti. After escaping from the room, the three of them ran into the dining room and saw Darminah holding a skull and frizzy hair. Darminah turns out to be a demon who tries to intimidate people whose faith is weak. Then, after being terrorized and dying without repentance, that person will be made a devil's servant in hell. Rita, Munarto, and Tomi ran to the front door and managed to open the door, where there was already a kiai and supporters. Together they confront Darminah and the three zombies with the letter of the Qur'an. They all burn.
The film ends with Munarto, Tomi, and Rita has repented and just returned from the mosque to the car. Next to them is a car occupied by a woman (Darminah).
