Parastratiosphecomyia stratiosphecomyioides is a species of flies in the soldier fly family (Stratiomyidae).[2] Its genus name comes from Ancient Greek, meaning "Near soldier wasp-fly", with its species name meaning "wasp fly-like". It is considered to be the animal with the longest scientific name.[3] The Parastratiosphecomyia, also known by its also long common name Southeast Asian soldier fly, was discovered in 1923 by British entomologist Enrico Brunetti.
Markings and colorings
The Parastratiosphecomyia stratiosphecomyioides exhibits an imperfect form of an adaptation called Batesian mimicry, where it has adapted the pattern and coloring of similar venomous and noxious species of Diptera, which enables them to avoid predators that actively avoid consuming such species.
