the Pacific sergeant major or Panama sergeant major (Abudefduf troschelii) is a species of damselfish belonging to the family Pomacentridae.[2] Its specific name honours the zoologist Franz Hermann Troschel (1810-1882).[4]

Description

Abudefduf troschelii can reach a length of about 10–23 centimetres (3.9–9.1 in).[5] Body is deep, oval and compressed, with a continuous dorsal fin and a forked caudal fin. This damselfish has 13 dorsal spines, 12-13 dorsal soft rays, 2 anal spines and 12-13 analsoft rays.[5][6] The ground coloration of the body is whitish with five bright black vertical stripes on the sides, a black spot on the base of the pectoral fin and usually a bright yellow back. These diurnal non-migratory fishes feed on zooplankton, benthic invertebrates and various species of algae. They are popular aquarium fishes.

Distribution and habitat

This species is endemic to the Eastern Pacific, from the Gulf of California and Mexico to northern Peru and the Galapagos Islands.[5] It is a tropical marine reef-associated species. It can be found on rocky shores and coral reefs at depths between one and 12 meters.[1][5][6]
