Founded in 1984, Orca Book Publishers is an independently owned Canadian children's book publisher of award-winning, bestselling books in a number of genres. With over 800 titles in print and more than 80 new titles a year, Orca prides itself on publishing Canadian authors and bringing them to a wider market.

Orca publishes high-quality board books and picture books to captivate the youngest of readers, as well as novels for school-aged readers and young adults. The publishing house's high-interest, low-reading-level (hi-lo) fiction titles (belonging to the Orca Currents, Orca Sports, Orca Soundings, Orca Limelights and Rapid Reads series) were among the earliest entries into this now massive category, and due to their success have driven the international expansion of hi-lo titles for struggling readers by other publishers. The series is widely regarded by educators as the gold standard for books that address literacy issues.

Orca's middle-grade fiction and teen novels consistently receive international recognition, and have been translated into dozens of languages. In 2013, Orca launched a new middle-grade nonfiction series called Orca Footprints. Written by authors with deep personal interest and experience in their selected topics, titles in this series offer a comprehensive, fact-rich overview of issues related to global sustainability, social responsibility, natural systems and human communities. Launched in 2016, the Orca Origins series offers an engaging, culturally sensitive introduction to global, religious and popular culture traditions. In 2016, Orca published Pride: Celebrating Diversity and Community to wide acclaim; within a few months of publication, Pride joined the ranks of trusted nonfiction titles in the fast-growing LGBTQ space, and continues to serve as a touchstone book for issues relating to: gender identity; sexual orientation; history, discrimination and persecution of members of the LGBTQ community; recent expansion of social norms in this area; and ongoing challenges. 2017 saw the publication of Stepping Stones: A Refugee Family's Journey. Created in partnership with a Syrian artist and with proceeds from the sales going to support refugee resettlement programs across North America, Stepping Stones is another example of Orca's commitment to expanding the conversation around social responsibility.

A long-time member of the Association of Book Publishers of British Columbia and the Association of Canadian Publishers, Orca's complement of board book, picture book, fiction, nonfiction and graphic novel offerings continues to expand, fostering deep conversations that are not limited to the young readers for whom the books are published. Teachers and parents have long trusted Orca titles to provide the highest quality material for reading and discussion.

All Orca titles are available in multiple digital formats for reading on a variety of devices, and collections are available on a subscription basis. We are proud of our dedication to publishing diverse books, and our responsible publishing practices include printing virtually all books in Canada on Forest Stewardship Certified paper and making every effort to reduce, reuse and recycle.

The main editorial office and warehouse are located in Victoria, British Columbia. From a warehouse near Bellingham, Washington, Orca distributes its own titles and those of a number of other Canadian publishers into the United States.
