History

Until 1991, the Bandar Utama Damansara area was originally consisted of palm oil estates with a population fewer than 100 people. Development of Bandar Utama Damansara began in the early 1990s under the company named See Hoy Chan Holdings Sdn. Bhd., and an attempt to modernise the area was made, with the opening of Sri Pentas, TV3's broadcast centre nearby, which was opened in 1995 and officially opened in October 1996, followed by the 1 Utama Shopping Centre, which became increasingly well known after the Jaya Jusco chain of department stores, presently known as AEON, moved its Taman Tun Dr. Ismail, Kuala Lumpur outlet to Bandar Utama in 1995.

A new wing is currently being built, adjacent to the new MRT stop.

Visitors

1 Utama receives roughly 60,000 to 90,000 visitors every weekday, and as many as 120,000 on weekends according to the management. Its occupancy rate is 98%.[4]

Awards

1 Utama was named "Shopping Complex of the Year" at the Retail World Excellence Awards 2006/07. In 2006, 1 First Avenue, a 30-storey corporate office tower (occupied by IBM, Schlumberger and KPMG) was completed and a 428-room hotel attached to the centre opened the following year.[5]

Prior to the opening of the pedestrian link bridge to 1 Utama, commuters had to take MRT feeder buses or 1 Utama's own shuttle buses from the MRT Feeder Bus Terminal at 1Powerhouse along Persiaran Bandar Utama. Access to 1Powerhouse is via Entrance A of the station.

Bus

The Bandar Utama bus hub is located next to the new wing of 1 Utama beside the open air car park. RapidKL bus 800 from KL Sentral and 801 from Metro Prima, Kepong, terminate at this bus hub.
