Olivia O'Brien (born November 26, 1999) is an American singer and songwriter based in Los Angeles. She is best known for her collaboration with gnash on the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 song, "i hate u, i love u". She has since released her debut extended play It's Not That Deep.

Early life

O’Brien was born on November 26, 1999, in Thousand Oaks, California. She has been singing since she was seven years old, and taught herself to play guitar and piano. She attended Justin-Siena High School in Napa, California.[1] She later attended an online high school, but ultimately decided to drop out to focus on her career.[2]

Career

2015–2016: Breakthrough

O'Brien initially gained the attention of gnash after posting a cover of one of his songs on Soundcloud. Gnash reached out to Olivia expressing interest in her material, and asked for her to send him any original songs that she had. O’Brien then sent a voice note of her original song, "hate u, love u" and gnash invited her to record the song with him in LA.[1] "i hate u, i love u" was released in March 2016, and appears on gnash's third EP titled us.[3] The single peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100[4] and reached number one in Australia. The two made their television debut in July 2016, performing the song on Late Night with Seth Meyers.[5]

2016-present: Debut singles and It's Not That Deep

On August 12, O’Brien released her debut solo single "Trust Issues" through Island Records.[6] "The song is empowering for girls and anyone who doesn't want to be treated like they're less than a guy or anyone who finds it hard to obtain self-worth without the approval of another person," O’Brien said of the song. “Trust Issues” premiered through Complex magazine.[7] Her second single, "Root Beer Float" featuring blackbear, premiered on September 15, 2016.[8] O'Brien and gnash made their second television performance on September 19, 2016, performing "i hate u, i love u" on Today.[9] O'Brien released a third single, "Find What You're Looking For" on October 21, 2016.[10] On December 9, 2016, O'Brien released "hate u love u" as a single, the original solo version of "i hate u, i love u."[11][12] O'Brien also released an acoustic video for the song on December 20, 2016.[13] She released a new song titled "Empty" on February 17, 2017.[14] In March 2017, O'Brien was nominated for an iHeartRadio Music Award for Best Solo Breakout, but lost to Zayn.[15] She released the song "RIP" on July 14, 2017, along with its accompanying music video.[16][17]

On November 3, 2017, Olivia released a single titled "No Love". Her debut EP, It's Not That Deep, was released on November 17.[18]

O'Brien featured in the acoustic version of Jack & Jack's single "Beg", released in January 2018.[19]

In June 29, 2018, a remix of song "RIP" was released with the collaboration of G-Eazy and Drew Love,[20] while on August 3, 2018 a new single named "UDK" was put on digital retailers and streaming platforms.[21] On September 14, 2018, O'Brien released a new single, entitled "I Don't Exist" on iTunes, after teasing the song's release on Twitter and Instagram.[22]
