The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ), formerly known as the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR),[1] is the state's leading stewardship agency for the preservation and protection of natural resources and public health. The Department is headed by the Secretary of Environmental Quality. Donald R. van der Vaart served as Secretary from January, 2015 until December 2016.[2]
