Neoarctus primigenius is a species of tardigrades. It is the only species of Neoarctus being the only genus of the Neoarctiidae,[1] being the only family of the order Arthrotardigrada.

The family, genus and species were named by Grimaldi de Zio, D'Addabbo Gallo and Morone De Lucia in 1992.

Etymology

The specific name of the family and the genus names is Greek (νεος άρκτος neos arktos) for new bear, the new water bear. The species name, the second one is Latin primigenius meaning first-born.

Description

The female holotype measures up to 99 mm long and 36 mm wide.[1]

Distribution

The species is endemic to the island of Sardinia and are founded in the Gulf of Orosei which is part of the Tyrrhenian Sea up to 38 metres deep.[2]
