The NWA National Heavyweight Championship is a professional wrestling championship created by the National Wrestling Alliance. It was the major singles title in the NWA-affiliated Georgia Championship Wrestling (GCW) from 1980 until 1986 and was defended within the territorial region in which GCW operated. When GCW was purchased by the World Wrestling Federation in July 1984 the then-NWA National Champion The Spoiler went to work for the WWF and was briefly recognised by that promotion as National Champion.[1] Soon thereafter, a new promotion (Championship Wrestling from Georgia) was formed and sanctioned by the NWA. They awarded the NWA National Championship to Ted DiBiase.

In 1985, Jim Crockett Promotions purchased the TBS Saturday and Sunday night television slots from the WWF and began production on a new era of "World Championship Wrestling." JCP essentially consolidated Championship Wrestling from Georgia (taking over that group's Saturday morning time slot as well) and began to recognize their championships. Eventually Crockett held a unification match between his company's United States Champion and the National Champion. The U.S. champion won and that version of the National title was abandoned.[2]

In 1997, the NWA reactivated the National Heavyweight Championship, which has since been defended throughout the United States in various NWA-affiliated promotions. The title is currently vacant. The NWA have announced that a new National champion will be crowned at their 70th Anniversary Show on October 21, 2018 in Nashville, Tennessee.[3]
