Monteverde is a comune in the province of Avellino in Southern Italy.[1]

History

The ancient Roman historian Livy mentions a Samnite village called Cominium Ocritum, which was crossed by Hanno, Hannibal's general, during the Second Punic War, which could be identified with modern Monteverde.[2] The name Cominium was a common toponym of the Oscans, to which the Samnites belonged, perhaps related to people's meeting places (comitia).

In the 11th century, it became a bishopric seat and had a bishop until 1531, when the diocese of Monteverde was merged with the diocese of Canne. From 1532 to 1641, it was a baronial seigniory, held by a branch of the Grimaldi family.[3] The diocese was eventually cancelled in 1818.
