Mohanad Ali Kadhim (Arabic: مهند علي, born 20 June 2000 in Iraq), commonly known as Mimi, is an Iraqi footballer who plays as a forward for Iraqi Premier League club Al-Shorta and the Iraq national team. He is known for his dribbling ability, feints, and close ball control.[1][2][3][4][5]

Club career

Early career

Mohanad started his career at the Ammo Baba Football School [6] where he enrolled at the age of six without a trial after coaches had been impressed with the striker before he was called up by the Iraq FA to play for Saad Hashim’s Under 14s team.[7]

Al Shorta

In September 2013, the player signed a five-year contract with Al-Shorta.[8] He scored his first goal for Al-Shorta on 20 September 2015 against Al-Sinaa in the 2015–16 Iraqi Premier League with a header.[9] He spent a season on loan at Baghdad club Al-Kahraba,[10] and finished as the top scorer for the club with 12 goals in 30 matches in the 2016–17 season.[11][12] The club finished 13th in the league.

2017–18 season

After the loan, he returned to Al Shorta on October 2017. He scored his first two goals against Naft Al-Janoob in the 2–1 victory in January 2018.[13] He finished his season with Al Shorta with 17 goals in 30 appearances in the league. The team finished in 4th position.

On 13 March 2018, the football newspaper indicated that Mohanad has become close to representatives of one of the German clubs for the next season through one of the agents of the players accredited to FIFA, where the striker is closely watched. Al Shorta announced that it would not prevent the player from moving to European clubs.[14][15] In July 2018, Mohanad is on the radar of Turkish side Goztepe, according to a report in Turkey.[16][17]

International career

Youth

Mohanad made his debut for Iraq's Under-14s in 2013 at the age of just 13. He was top scorer at a youth tournament in Nanjing in August 2013 where the Iraq u-14s beat Singapore,[18] Kuwait and Thailand in the quarterfinals before they lost to Iran in the semis and the third and fourth match on penalties to North Korea.[19] Mohanad was joint top scorer with six goals at the 2013 Asian Youth Games. In the first ever edition of the AFC U-14 Championship in 2014,[7][20] Mohanad won the top scorer award with six goals and his team won the cup.[21][22][23]

Senior

He made his official debut for the Iraq national team against Bahrain in the 23rd Arabian Gulf Cup on 23 December 2017.[24] He scored his first and second goal for Iraq in a friendly match against Saudi Arabia on 28 February 2018.[24] He scored his third goal, a header, for Iraq in a 1–1 draw with Syria during the 2018 International Friendship Championship.[25]

Style of play

“We always trust Mohanad. He has good feet, he can connect powerfully with headers and he is very clever in the box."

– Iraq youth coach commenting on Mohanad[23]

Mohanad is talented with good technique, and an adept header of the ball, and ability to score impressive goals, in the air and with both his feet from anywhere on the pitch. He is physically strong with good skills, tactical intelligence, and confidence in going at opponents with numerical superiority.[1][2][3][4][5][7][23]

His name

Mohanad played for two seasons under the name of Hassan Ali during the 2015-2016 season with Al-Shurta and the 2016-2017 season at Al-Kahraba. But in 2017, an Iraqi court ruled that Mohanad Ali Kadhim was his real name and that his date of birth was the year 2000. There have been allegations that he played for the Iraqi U-14s under his brother's name and a doctored date of birth, with his real DOB being 1997.[30]
