Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College is a government managed medical college established in 1986. It is located in Salem, Tamil Nadu, India and is named after Mohan Kumaramangalam. It is recognised by the Medical Council of India. The total number of MBBS places are 100. The total number of postgraduate medical places are 82 (year 2018). Mohan Kumaramangalam Nursing College is also situated in the medical college campus functioning in separate building.

History

  • The Salem government district hospital was built in 1913 by the British government. This hospital was built in the purpose of serving people and British officers in the unified Salem district. The hospital spans in the area of 13 acres.
  • The foundation stone of Government Mohan Kumaramanagalam Medical College was laid down by then Indian Prime Minister Thiru. Rajiv Gandhi in October, 1988.
  • The college started functioning and the first batch was admitted in the year 1990 with just 65 students.
  • The Salem Medical College was named as Mohan Kumaramangalam in honor of then steel minister Mohan Kumaramangalam who was born in Kumaramangalam, an area near Thiruchengode (then unified Salem district, now under Namakkal district)
  • From the year 2013 the number of undergraduate MBBS seats is increased to 100.
  • The silver jubliee of this college was celebrated in 2015.

Infrastructure

  • The college campus a faculty block (Iyal koodam), an old lecture building consisting of four lecture halls, a new lecture hall with satellite connecy, an examination hall.
  • The central library of GMKMC has more than 20 computers for academic purposes, more than 12,000 books and journals.

GMKMC is nearly the preferred college next to MMC, Stanley, Kilpauk, Coimbatore Medical College, Madurai Medical College. The seats are filled in pair with KAPV and Thanjavur medical college.

  • GMKMC is affiliated to GMKMCH which is situated 9 km from the college campus.
  • The hospital spans over 13 acres and it is situated opposite to the Salem district collector office.
  • The superspeciality block in the hospital campus is built on green building model 2nd to Delhi AIIMS.
  • The superspeciality block is with centralised air-conditioning system and has an conference hall and lecture hall in it.

Transport and Connectivity

  • There are two college buses for students to travel from college to the hospital.
  • The college campus is situated on Salem - Salem Steel plant (Tharamangalam) four lane road.
  • The college is situated in between Salem Aavin milk diary and Salem Steel plant.
  • There are numerous buses to connect to college to Salem junction which is in 5 km, Salem central (new) bus stand which is 7 km and Salem town (old) bus stand which is 10 km away.
  • Salem junction being a divisional headquarters of Salem division in Southern railway and a junction of 5 railway lines. It has many trains to Chennai, Erode, Coimbatore, Trichy, Virudachalam, Madurai, etc.
  • The new operational Salem airport provides air connectivity to Chennai.
  • Salem is the intersection of highway roads from Coimbatore, Bangalore, Karur and Chennai.
