Christine Ko (born September 5, 1985), known professionally as Miss Ko, is a Taiwanese-American rapper and singer-songwriter. She won Best New Artist at the 24th Annual Golden Melody Awards (Grammy's of Taiwan) and is the first rap artist to win the award. Ko has released three studio albums to date and collaborated with major acts such as MC Hot Dog, Khalil Fong, Crowd Lu and A-mei. She is currently signed to Universal Music Group.[1]

Early life

Born and raised in Queens, New York, Ko attended Brooklyn Technical High School, where she began rapping as a means to memorize her schoolwork.[2]

Ko later earned a Bachelor in Music Business at Five Towns College, where she graduated as valedictorian.[3] During college, she was chosen out of thousands to perform for Hot 97's Night of the Rising Stars, which encouraged her to pursue music further.[4]

In 2009, Ko released her first mixtape Industry Makeover, which independently sold several thousands units, particularly in Asia. This prompted her to move to her parent's native country, Taiwan and learn Mandarin at National Taiwan Normal University. While enrolled there, she entered a local songwriting competition and was approached by Taiwanese hip hop producers, Dela Chang and Soft Lipa 蛋堡. Ko was subsequently signed to their label Kao Inc Records.

On November 1, 2011, Ko broke her jaw in a traffic accident, which left her immobile for several months. During her recovery, she finished writing her first album, Knock Out.[5]

Career

2012–2015: Knock Out and XXXIII

After her recovery, Ko released her debut album Knock Out on August 15, 2012. She then returned to New York to start her Master's at NYU. Knock Out peaked #1 on local music charts and won Ko Best New Artist at the 24th Annual Golden Melody Awards, in addition to "Most Outstanding Asian-American Youth Overseas." that same year.[6]

On December 31, 2014, Ko released her sophomore album XXXIII (33), which featured various artists such as Crowd Lu, Billie, and Amber An. The album was a major commercial success with hit songs such as "Soul Train" and "Selfie," exceeding a million views on YouTube. Despite its success, Ko moved back to New York after unresolved conflicts with her label.

2016–Present: Queen of Queens

In 2016, Ko signed with Universal Music Group.[7] On December 22, 2016, Ko released her third album Queen of Queens, which featured hit singles such as "Till Next Time" and "Queen of Queens." The album reached #1 on i-Tunes and Spotify.

Ko was nominated for Best Female Artist at the 28th Annual Golden Melody Awards.

On March 27, 2018, Ko was announced as the spokesperson for McDonald's.
