Historical background

Memons are generally considered a trading community and majority of them originally lived both in India and Pakistan. Later they spread all over the world like most other communities did in modern times.

Many Muslim Sindhi Memons moved to Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan from India, when old British India was partitioned in 1947 into Pakistan and India.[1] Sindhi Memons quickly ventured into trade, manufacturing and the textile industry in Pakistan with the encouragement of the Government of Pakistan.[1]

Adamjee Haji Dawood of Adamjee Group of Companies, Valikas and Gul Ahmed Group of the Sindhi Memon community soon became prominent industrialists in Pakistan.[1]

Social welfare work

With the help of some Sindhi Memon philanthropists, a hospital project called Memon Medical Institute was launched in Karachi in 2003 and was planned to be completed by 2010.[3]
