Mekliganj College, established on 22 December 1996, is general degree college in Mekliganj. It is in Cooch Behar district. It offers undergraduate courses in arts. It is affiliated to Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University.[1] At first it was affiliated to North Bengal University.
It is located at the remotest part of the district adjacent to Bengladesh border. After partition Mekhliganj, once strategically important town, was converted into a backward town from both socio-economic as well as academic perspectives. To overcome this backwardness, the people of Mekhliganj Subdivision, through relentless truffle of almost one decade established the college so that local people can get an opportunity to imrove their level of awareness. From its modest beginning in 1996, the college within a very short period has developed its own distinctive identity by introducing some new discipline as well as increasing the number of its faculty members. Thus the college has grown up both academically and physically within such a short time due to the relentless efforts of both the teaching an NonTeaching staff. Very recently, the college has received its permanent affiliation from the University of North Bengal, Which has paved the way for further development of the college in the near future. In the year 2014, the University of North Bengal has extended affiliation in three new subjects – Honours in English and General in Geography and Sanskrit. Thus, these three subjects have been introduced in this college w.e.f. 2013-2014 academic session. Further, from this academic session (2015-2016) the college has come under the administrative purview of Cooch Behar Panchanan Barman University (w.e.f 30.07.2015). This year (2015-2016) the college has admitted over 1000 students invarious subjects under online admission process.
