The Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science (MCCMS), formerly known as Mayo Clinic College of Medicine (MCCM),[2] is a private research university based in Rochester, Minnesota that trains physicians, scientists, and allied health professionals. The college is part of the Mayo Clinic academic medical center and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).[1] It is divided into five schools[5]:

History

The Mayo Clinic has a long history of medical education, and was a pioneer in postgraduate education for physicians.[13]

The first medical educational programs at the Mayo Clinic were developed in 1915 with the assistance and under the direction of the University of Minnesota.[14][15] The two institutions held close relationships in the early 19th century. Drs. William and Charles Mayo endowed the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research (MFMER) in 1915 with $1.5 million from their personal funds.[10] This endowment allowed the University to work with Mayo Clinic to develop academic degree programs for medical specialists at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Over time the Mayo Clinic severed their direct ties with the University of Minnesota and developed their own independently accredited programs including the development in 1972 of the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine. Over the years the Mayo Clinic has added additional faculty and programs in biomedical and health sciences, which has evolved into the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.[3][16]

Location

The Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science is based in Rochester, Minnesota, with additional campuses in Phoenix and Scottsdale, Arizona, and Jacksonville, Florida.[17]
