Count Maximilian Gustav Albrecht Richard Augustin von Götzen-Iturbide (born 2 March 1944)[1] is a Hungarian-born businessman and head of Imperial House of Mexico since 1949.[2]

Life and career

Götzen was born in Beszterce, the son of Baroness Maria Gizella Tunkl Iturbide and her second husband Count Gustav von Götzen.[1] By permission of the Hungarian Interior Ministry the children of Baroness Maria Gizella and Count Gustav were permitted to carry the surname Götzen-Iturbide, while his first and last given names reflect his lineage from Mexico's two emperors, his ancestor Augustin de Iturbide and Maximilian of Austria who adopted his great grandfather Prince Salvador de Iturbide. Count Maximilian has a younger sister, Countess Emanuella von Götzen-Iturbide (born 1945).[1]

In the years following World War II the family settled in South America where Götzen's father died in 1956 in Caracas.[1] Three years later his mother was married in Montevideo to Ottavio Della Porta. The family eventually moved to Australia.[1]

Götzen has worked as a stockbroker.[1] He also has real estate business interests in Morelia and Guadalajara.[3]

Mexican Imperial House

Although head of the Imperial House of Mexico, Götzen[4] does not pursue any claim to the throne and has stated his only political interest is in respect of the legacy and reputation of his ancestor Augustin de Iturbide as the leader of Mexico's independence.[3]

Despite not actively pursuing any claim himself a number of Mexican monarchist organisations advocate the restoration of the monarchy in the country and recognise Götzen as the legitimate heir to the throne.[5][4]

Family

Götzen was married in Melbourne on 22 September 1990 to Maria Anna de Francecshi.[1] They have two children:

  • Count Ferdinand von Götzen-Iturbide (born 1992 in Perth),[1]
  • Countess Isabella von Götzen-Iturbide (born 1997 in London)[1]
