Lathe (audio mastering)

Mastering lathe

A mastering lathe is a groove cutting machine and its additional equipment used by the mastering engineer for the making of audio records. It is employed to produce the mother record for the manufacture of vinyl records. Cutting is done under constant rotation of a lacquer-coated and heated aluminium disk called the die. A pure copper disk may be used for direct metal mastering.
