Mary Batayneh

Mary Nazzal-Batayneh is a barrister (English Bar), social justice activist, founder of Landmark Hotels Company.

Nazzal-Batayneh completed a BA in political science from Barnard College, Columbia University, and law degrees from SOAS, University of London, the College of Law London and the Inns of Court School of Law London.

Nazzal-Batayneh has been chosen as one of Forbes "Most Powerful Arab women" for consecutive years running. Her work was featured as a Forbes cover story. She was also chosen as a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum as the only Jordanian in the class of 2013. Young Global Leaders are chosen based on their commitment of their time and talent towards making the world a better place.

She is the founder of Landmark Hotels which owns and manages Landmark Amman. Landmark Hotels is committed to building local capacity and prioritizes the needs of the local community in all decisions. Mary’s most recent hotel initiatives include the establishment of an on-site day care for the children of Landmark employees. Mary is championing the creation of family-friendly businesses as a way of supporting parents in their multiple roles. Mary has lectured on this topic at Harvard University. Landmark was the first local hotel brand to expand outside of Jordan by opening and managing the St George Landmark hotel in Occupied East Jerusalem.

She serves on several Boards including Al Shabaka: the Palestinian Policy Network and the Royal Film Commission of Jordan. She is also a member of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO) and the International Women’s Forum (IWF).

Mary played a leading role in the Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign that campaigned against the construction of the apartheid wall in Occupied Palestine. As part of her advocacy, in 2004, she created a multi-dimensional exhibition on the wall and the occupation apparatus. The exhibition drew in thousands of visitors and received worldwide acclaim. Mary also serves on the board of INJAZ (an NGO dedicated for preparing young Jordanians to become productive members of their society and succeed in a global economy).

Activism

Nazzal-Batayneh has been a political activist for Palestinian rights for over 20 years in Europe and the US and is a founding member of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (also known as BDS) in Jordan. She was the chair of the Palestine Legal Aid Fund which seeks to support legal action to hold Israel accountable for crimes against the Palestinian people.

She is a volunteer brand ambassador for the Social Enterprise Project (SEP) which produces high-end fashion accessories by female artists living in the Gaza refugee camp in Jordan.

Personal life

Nazzal-Batayneh has 3 children.
