Marie-Madeleine de Parabère

Philippe d'Orléans, Duke of Orléans with Marie-Madeleine de Parabère by Pierre Gobert.

Marie-Madeleine de La Vieuville, Marquise de Parabère, sometimes wrongly referred to as Marie-Thérèse (1693-1755), was a French aristocrat. She was the official mistress of Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, during his tenure as regent of France during the minority of Louis XV of France, and as such a wellknown public figure during the French regency years (1715-1723).

Life

Marie-Madeleine de Parabère was the only child of René-Francois de La Vieuville and Marie Louise de La Chaussee d'Eu, and married Caesar-Alexandre de Baudéan, Marquis de Parabère (d. 1716) in 1711. Her mother was a lady-in-waiting to Marie Louise Élisabeth d'Orléans. After the death of her mother, she became known for her love life at court.

In 1716, she became the official mistress of the regent. As such she presided in his famous private parties and pleasure life. While she was the regent's main mistress, he had numerous temporary lovers, as did she. Many scandal stories where told about her, as they where about the regent, and she was thus a central figure in the scandal press of the time.

In 1721, her relationship with the regent was discontinued.

Marie-Madeleine de Parabère is known as the female counterpart of many paintings of the regent.
