Maria Józefa Sobieska

Maria Józefa Sobieska née Wessel (1685-1761), was a Polish princess, daughter-in-law of king John III Sobieski.

She was the daughter of Stanisław Wessel and Barbara Starhemberg. Her mother was the royal governess of Theresa Kunegunda Sobieska. In 1708, she married prince Konstanty Władysław Sobieski. The marriage was arranged against the will of the prince, who refused to live with her and demanded a divorce. From 1709, the couple lived apart, and the divorce proceedings resulted in proceedings which kept going for years, during which she was given full support by her in-laws, particularly her mother-in-law.
