Marginal Man was an American hardcore punk band from Washington, D.C., that formed in 1983.
Three of its members,
- vocalist Steve Polcari,
- guitarist Pete Murray, and
- drummer Mike Manos
had previously played together in Artificial Peace,[1] considered one of the seminal DC hardcore bands. Artificial Peace, which also included bassist Rob Moss, appeared on indie label Dischord Records' important Flex Your Head compilation, a musical document of the 1980s DC hardcore punk scene. After the break-up of Artificial Peace, those three formed up with
- bassist Andre Lee and
- guitarist Kenny Inouye,
who had both been in the band Toasterhead.[1]
Marginal Man was one of the first DC hardcore bands to feature a two-guitar attack, in contrast to the original hardcore band member set-up featuring a single guitarist. The band played together for five years before a (so-called) final performance at the 9:30 Club on March 24, 1988. The band has reunited for several shows: at the 9:30 Club on August 29, 1991 and December 30, 1995—the second-to-last show at the 9:30 Club's original location—and at the Black Cat on August 20, 2011.[2]
Guitarist Kenny Inouye is the son of the late former Representative, Senator, and Medal of Honor recipient Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii.[3]
