Mallinson Girls School is located in the Heart of Srinagar in Kashmir Valley. The school was founded by Miss Fitze in 1912 at Fateh Kadal and later shifted to Lal Chowk in Srinagar.

History

The founder of the modern CMS School for girls which later came to be known as Mallinson Girls' School, was Miss Violet B. Fitze. It was in October 1912, when Miss Violet B. Fitze laid the foundation of the CMS Girls' School in a mud house in FatehKadal. In the beginning, Miss Fitze had to face opposition from various quarters, but her calm, confidence and perseverance bore fruit, and by 1918, the school was raised to the middle standard and it received a grant of Rs. 700/- from the Education Department of the State. Miss Violet B. Fitze died in 1929. Violet Fitze's selfless and beautiful life had already begun to take roots in her girls and it was this fragrance of selflessness and humility that attracted the heart of another heroic soul who made girls' education acceptable in Srinagar in the midst of severe odds. It was a young lady, Miss Muriel P. Mallinson. With the arrival of Miss Mallinson in October 1922, the new age of women's education really dawned. The School underwent a radical transformation during the period Miss Mallinson was the Principal (1922-61). It can hardly be over emphasized that it was Miss Mallinson who was instrumental in bringing about educational and cultural advancement among the women of Srinagar. Under her inspiring leadership, the school became a hub of cultural activities. Miss Mallinson introduced Drill, Camping, Mountaineering, Cycling, Arts and Crafts, Home Science and many other activities which became compulsory in the years to come for the rest of the state and even for the women of the country. What she introduced in the first quarter of the twentieth century was introduced in the country in late fifties, after Independence. The subjects taught in the school were English, Urdu, Persian, General Knowledge, Mathematics and Nature Study (Environmental Studies). Hindi was introduced in 1944 and General Science in 1946-47. So far this subject had not been provided for in any other girls School. Apart from these subjects, Basket Making, Embroidery, Laundry, Cooking etc. also received much attention. The will and vision, capability and contribution to make it in tomorrow's uncertain world and to swim against the stream, the enthusiasm, the zeal, the courage, the sincerity, the truthfulness, the cause and conviction never doused the fire, the celestial fire which is called the Love of God.

The year 1942 saw the shifting of the Biscoe Boys' School to a large piece of land at Sheikh-Bagh, donated by Mr.Hadow, a carpet merchant, to the CMS. The Girls' School also followed suit in 1965 since the space was available at the Sheikh-Bagh Campus to accommodate the newly named Miss Muriel P. Mallinson Girls' School. The schools in Srinagar stood strong during the difficult days of the world wars and continued to work for the good of the people of Kashmir who preferred their methods and gained a great deal from the Missionaries. Their contribution in the Medical and Educational field has left a tremendous influence on the life of the common masses. The Administration of the schools in the valley was handed over to the Church in India by the C.M.S. London, in 1953, with its Administrative Office being the Diocese of Amritsar. Ms. Muriel P. Mallinson retired in the year 1962 and later visited the schools as a visitor twice. She was present for the last time in Tyndale-Biscoe in 1970. She passed away to be with the Lord in June, 1980. The next C.M.S. Missionary to take over was Mr. John Mead Ray who held the charge of the Mallinson School as its Manager till his departure from Kashmir in 1986. During his tenure, the schools were strengthened in outdoor activities and the House System. He added a number of buildings during his tenure to accommodate more students in the Biscoe Boys’ School as well as the Mallinson Girls' School on the Sheikh-Bagh Campus. He specially raised the standards of activities like Mountaineering, Skiing, Regattas, Trekking and Climbing in the mountains that surround the beautiful valley of Kashmir. He was a very popular Principal. Miss Prem Sudhamani Gergan (Premi) joined as a Senior teacher in the Mallinson School in 1962. She became its Headmistress in 1969 and later took over as Principal in 1986. She left the school in 1993.

Since 1993, Mr.Parwez Samuel Kaul and Mrs. Joyce Kaul have been looking after the Tyndale-Biscoe and Mallinson Society Schools till date. Having come from the Indian Public School (IPSC) background, Mr. and Mrs.Kaul have well understood the importance of the rich heritage of the schools and have maintained the strong tradition of Camping, Regattas, Swimming, High Altitude Trekking and Climbing etc. in these schools and have raised an academic standard which is the envy of the best of schools in North India. The period beyond 1989 saw turmoil in the social, political and ideological atmosphere in Kashmir and militancy broke out throughout the Kashmir region. The staff as well as the students worked shoulder to shoulder to save the school from getting permanently affected. They did a lot of social service at the time of need. It was during this time that the school strengthened its infrastructural base and the buildings, some of them over 100 years old, were replaced with new structures according to the increased needs of the schools at Sheikh-Bagh and Tangmarg. The schools were registered under the Societies Act in the year 1992. The Tyndale-Biscoe and Mallinson Society, Srinagar for the State of Jammu and Kashmir was formed in the year 1996 and the Boys' and Girls' Schools were merged for administrative purposes. An important decision taken by the General Body of the School Management (the Executive Committee of the Diocese of Amritsar, CNI) was that the schools at Srinagar and all its branches (Present and Future) shall be administered from a centralized office at Sheikh-bagh. The school strength was raised to almost double due to immense pressure and demand for admissions. The introduction of the Human Resources Development, that is the HRD/IT Departments in the History of these schools, is a unique feature. The school administration is trying modern techniques of Management through online and digital access. ....
