Hemanta Kumari Debi

Maharani Hemanta Kumari Debi was a zamindar based in Northern Bengal.[1][2] She was the last queen of the Puthia Raj family.[3]

Biography

Kumari was born in 1869 at Dhulla village of Manikganj district of Bangladesh. She was married to the Jatindra Narayan, the head of the Puthia Raj family in 1880. Her husband died when she was 14 years old in 1883. After the death of her husband she became the administrator of the Puthia Estate and head of the Puthia Raj family in 1887. The estate improved under her management and she gained a reputation as an able administrator. She established Hemanta Kumari Boarding, Maharani Hemantakumari Sanskrit College, and Maharani Hemanta Kumari Water Works in Rajshahi city. She was awarded the title Rani in 1901 and the title Maharani in 1937. She died in 1942.[3]

Puthia Rajbari is the palace of Rani Hemanta Kumari, it is an example of Indo-Saracenic Revival architecture, in Puthia Upazila, in Bangladesh. It was built in 1895.
