Macomades
Macomades was a city and bishopric in Roman Africa and remains a Latin Catholic titular see.
History
Macomades was one of many towns in the Roman province of Numidia which were important enough to become – no later than 256 AD – a suffragan of its capital's Metropolitan, but faded like most, notably during the 7th century Muslim invasion.
Its site was identified as Merkeb-Talha, in modern Algeria.
Residential bishops
- Cassius, at the council of Carthage called in 256 by Saint Cyprianus to discuss the 'lapsed' Christians who preferred forced idolatry to martyrdom
- Donatus, mentioned since 406, praised by Saint Augustine of Hippo in Contra Cresconium for abjuring the heresy Donatism
- Aurelius participated in the 411 council of Carthage (where both Catholic and heretical bishops were invited) as well as his Donatist counterpart from Macomades, Sallustius
- Pardalius was exiled after participating in the 484 synod of Carthage, called by the Vandal king Huneric, an Arian; in 487 he parttook, probably as Numidian delegate, in Pope Felix III's Lateran Council.
