The Madison Washington, D.C.

The Madison Washington, D.C. is a luxury hotel located in Washington, D.C., in the United States. Built as The Madison Hotel in 1963, it was known as the Loews Madison Hotel until September 2017, when the hotel was sold and assumed its current name. The hotel is now part of the Hilton Hotels & Resorts chain.

History

Built in 1963 as The Madison Hotel, the hotel was opened by President John F. Kennedy.[1] The hotel has hosted every President of the United States since then.[2] It was managed by the Loews hotel chain for many years until 2010, when it was sold. In 2012 the hotel completed a $22 million renovation project to improve its guest rooms, lobby, restaurant and bar.[3] Soon after, Loews Corp bought the hotel in December 2012[4] and it rejoined the Loews chain in January 2013.

In September 2017, Loews sold the hotel to Walton Street Capital for $72.5 million. The actual sales price, the Washington Business Journal reported, was likely much higher since the sale of the building did not include the price of intangible assets. Walton Street Capital hired Hilton Hotels & Resorts to manage the hotel, which was now branded as a Hilton. Rural Society, the hotel's Argentine steakhouse, closed permanently.[5]

Rating

The AAA gave the hotel four diamonds out of five in 2012. The hotel has maintained that rating every year, and received four diamonds again for 2016.[6] Forbes Travel Guide (formerly known as Mobil Guide) declined to give the hotel five stars in 2016, nor did the hotel make its "recommended" list.[7]
