List of countries in Asia and Oceania by Human Development Index

The Human Development Index (HDI) is a comparative measure of life expectancy, literacy, education and standards of living for countries worldwide. It is a standard means of measuring well-being, especially child welfare. It is used to distinguish whether the country is a developed, a developing or an under-developed country, and also to measure the impact of economic policies on quality of life. The index was developed in 1990 by Pakistani economist Mahbub ul Haq[1] and Indian economist Amartya Sen.[2]

The table below presents the latest Human Development Index (HDI)[3] for countries in Asia and the Pacific as included in a United Nations Development Programme's Human Development Report (released in 2016).[4] Data for China does not include Taiwan and the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau.

Previous HDI values and rankings are retroactively recalculated using the same updated data sets and current methodologies, as presented in Table 2 of the Statistical Annex of the Human Development Report.[5] The HDI rankings and values in the 2016 Human Development Report cannot therefore be compared directly to HDI rankings and values published in previous Human Development Reports.
