| Bai Duchang owns The Quarters. He has three grandsons, Jinchuan, Jinfeng and Jinhai. Among the three, he favours the intellectually-handicapped Jinchuan most, and often reprimands the sensible child, Jinhai. Duchang wants Lianhua to marry Jinchuan so that she can take care of Jinchuan. However, Lianhua hopes that Jinfeng can take her away. Jinfeng refuses, and Lianhua hangs herself on the day of the wedding. | ||

| Bai Duchang and Hong Da Zui tries to push the responsibility of Lianhua's funeral rites to each other. They decide to keep everything simple to save cost. Jinchuan spends a night at the Guanyin temple. He awakes to find the pregnant Shi Jinchun, and mistakes her for the goddess Guanyin. | ||

| Jinhai and Shi San Gong discusses Jinchuan's and Jinchun's marriage. Shi San Gong frankly discloses that Jinchun was once in love with young master Guan, and has his baby, but was rejected by his father. Jinhai admits that his brother Jinchuan is also not perfect, and will not harp on Jinchun's past. Both parties come to an agreement. | ||

| Guan Cai Lian ad Naidong go hunting, and injured Jinhai by accident. Naidong is overwhelmed by guilt and goes to the hospital to take care of Jinhai. In the process, she falls in love with him. Jinchuan says that his Dad is dead, and he can always marry a second time, but he only has one younger brother, and should anything untoward happen to him, she has to be responsible. Nai Dong does not know how to respond. | ||

| Naidong is not in the best of moods. She goes drinking at a masquerade party, and even bets with her friends that she will kiss the first guy that enters the dance hall. Coincidentally, Jinhai comes to work at the restaurant, and wears a mask to dispose of rubbish. Naidong rushes up and kisses him, making him angry and surprised at the same time. Jinhai feels that this job is not suitable for him. He takes off his mask and leaves. | ||

| Jinchuan is worried when Jinchun does not return home for the night. While praying to the gods, the room became filled with smoke, causing them to mistake that the room had caught fire. While attempting to put out the fire with Qiumei, he knocks down a cabinet which falls on Qiumei. Jinchuan runs out in shock announcing the fire. Everyone packs up their belongings and flees the building. | ||

| Qiumei is on her way to work when Qi Kuai Ba accidentally runs into her with his bicycle. Jinhai insists on bringing her to a doctor. Qiumei is touched, but when they arrive at the hospital, Jinhai abandons her to tend to Naidong. Qiumei is dejected. | ||

| Thanks to Jinchuan, a hole is burnt in Jinhai's examination admission form. The next day, Jinhai nervously sets off for the examination hall, and informs the door keeper that his admission form had been burnt. He begs the examiner to let him in. The door keeper recommends Jinhai to speak to Professor Yun. Guan Cai Lian resorts to underhand methods to prevent Jinhai from sitting for the examination. | ||

| Yan Ji Wang treats Dawan to a meal to ask for Qiumei's hand in marriage. Dawan tells Ji Wang to give up as Qiumei has already been match-made. But Ji Wang expresses no intention to give up. Dawan tells Qiumei of the marriage Qiumei's parents had arranged for her before they passed on. Qiumei keeps silent. | ||

| Tao Hua Yan goes all out to make things difficult for Luo Hanguo. When Luo Hanguo rebuts her, she fires Luo Hanguo and chases him out of the hall. Luo Hanguo regrets being impulsive. He pours his worries out to Tianshui and Jinhai, but gets into an argument with Tianshui. Yan Ji Wang makes things worse by adding oil to the fire. | ||

| Under the banyan tree, Hei Bai Jiang makes a dig at Qiumei and Jinhai when he tells a story of a girl seducing an educated young man. Dawan charged at Hei Bai Jiang wielding a chopper in hand, but was stopped by those on watching. Yang Ji Wang stands up and proclaims Qiumei to be his woman, and warns everyone to stay away from her. Tianshui and Jinhai were stunned, and Qiumei runs away in shame. | ||

| Jinhai wants to matchmake Tianshui and Qiumei. He asks Naidong if this is a selfish decision. Naidong supports him as she understands that Jinhai does not want Qiumei to marry Yan Ji Wang nor Qiumei to go back to Tangshan. Jinhai also does not want Tianshui to be alone, hence the matchmaking. Naidong brings up marriage. Jinhai feels pressurized. | ||

| Yan Ji Wang wants to take advantage of Qiumei in her moment of stupor. Fortunately, the Gods are on Qiumei's side and the drugged coffee was served to Tao Hua Yan instead. Tao Hua Yan was taken to a hotel room by Yan Ji Wang's subordinates. In the dim of the room, Yan Ji Wang mistook Tao Hua Yan for Qiumei. Tao Hua Yan woke up before Yan Ji Wang could do anything to her. She walloped him till he ran away in fear. | ||

| On the anniversary of Bai Du Chang's death, Jinhai notices an old photograph behind Bai Du Chang's tablet. The photograph is of a pair of Japanese mother and son. He suspects himself to be the child in the photograph, and asks Jinchuan about it. Jinchuan explains that in the past, the quarters was rented out to Japanese, and that the photograph might have been left behind by them. Jinhai is not convinced. | ||

| Jinhai was arrested on the grounds of theft at the hall. As a result, he loses the chance to retake his examination. Jinchun hears of Jinhai's arrest and rushes to bail him out. Jinchuan reprimands himself for destroying Jinhai's examination slip, and causing him to lose the chance to take the examination. | ||

| Dawan claims that she could not go to work as a result of the injuries Jinchun dealt her. She wants a compensation from Jinchun. Jinchun pays up, but mentions that rent will be increased. No one is pleased, and all of them bears a grudge towards Dawan. Dawan is unhappy about the increase in rent, and deliberately brings home white ants from the workplace. She shows them to Jinchun, claiming that she caught them at home. This causes an upstir in the quarters. | ||

| Naidong comes to visit Jinhai. Jinhai is not around. Jinchun advises Naidong that her family background is not compatible with Jinhai. Naidong insists that she does not mind Jinhai's poor background and hopes to move to the quarters after she marries him. Bo Si Mao gets into a fight with Dawan, and accidentally splashes dirty water on Naidong. | ||

| Jinchun decides to ask Yan Ji Wang to move out. A ring drops out from Yan Ji Wang's pile of clothes. Dawan tries to claim it as her own. However, she is stopped by Luo Hanguo who forces her to split the profit of the ring with him. | ||

| Qiumei is shocked to find Tianshui in a drain. She rescues him and takes good care of him. Tianshui is grateful, and expresses his love for Qiumei once again. He believes that Qiumei saving him is part of fate's arrangement for them. However, Qiumei declines Tianshui. | ||

| Jinchuan chances upon a letter, and discovers Jinhai's true birth. Jinhai was actually a Japanese woman's son that was put under Bai Du Chang's care after she died. Jinchuan is unable to handle the blow, and distances himself from Jinhai. Jinhai is puzzled. | ||

| Jinhai is put under arrest. He avoids Yan Ji Wang as much as possible, but saved Yan Ji Wang from an attempted murder. Jinhai is beaten up by the murderer's gang, causing his thigh injury to worsen. Jinhai is depressed. Yan Ji Wang is grateful to Jinhai for saving his life. | ||

| Jinhai is in pain. Yan Ji Wang offers him opium to stop the pain. Jinhai is addicted to opium. Tianshui is upset at Jinhai. He chides him for being insensible as Jinhai should know the ill-effects of opium. Jinhai regrets his actions and tries to quit his addiction, but to no avail. | ||

| Jinhai is finally released from jail. He bumps into Guan Cai Lian on the way out. Guan Cai Lian offers to help Jinhai quit his addiction should he leave Naidong. Jinhai decides to take up Guan Cai Lian's offer. He tells Tianshui to break the news to Naidong. Naidong rushes to see Jinhai, only to find him consuming opium. She leaves in disappointment. | ||

| Qiumei was nearly raped by Mr. Ou. She turns to Bo Si Mao. Bo Si Mao instigates Qiumei to become a dancer at sea. Qiumei reluctantly accepts, but insists that she will only dance and do nothing more. Jinhai is worried about Qiumei, and asks Bo Si Mao of her whereabouts. Bo Si Mao lies to everyone that Qiumei had gone to Malacca to look for her relatives. | ||

| Jinhai uses acupuncture to treat his addiction, but is only able to afford part of the payment. The doctor mocks him. He turns to Guan Cai Lian for a loan, but bumps into Luo Hanguo instead. Luo Hanguo expresses interest in Naidong, and hopes that Jinhai does not appear too often in front of Naidong. He says a lot of nasty things to Jinhai. Jinhai is disappointed. | ||

| Qiumei heard that Jinhai is short of money for rehabilitation. She decides to extort money from Mr Ou. Qiumei, Tao Hua Yan and Bo Si Mao seeks out Mr Ou, and threatens to expose his dirty deeds should he not give them money. Mr Ou succumbed to their threat and paid up. | ||

| The roof of the quarters is leaking. When Jinchun climbs up to have the roof checked out, she discovers that someone had hidden Bai Du Chang’s walking stick on the roof beams. Jinchuan feels uneasy when he sees the walking stick. He snatches it from Jinchun and throws it out the window. Jinchun is stunned. Jinchuan recalls the painful time when he was beaten up by the Japanese soldiers with a walking stick. | ||

| Guan Cai Lian tries to commit suicide in the pawnshop. Tao Hua Yan stops him in time and takes him to the villa. Luo Hanguo was taking someone to see the villa, and would not allow them to enter. Tao Hua Yan then brings Guan Cai Lian home, but he did not have his keys on him. She had no choice but to bring him to the quarters. | ||

| Guan Cai Lian gives Luo Hanguo a challenge. If Luo Hanguo was able to win Naidong’s hand in marriage, Guan Cai Lian would persuade Jinchuan to sell the quarters. Jinhai and Jinchun barges in and berates Guan Cai Lian for talking rubbish. They chase Luo Hanguo away. Guan Cai Lian is infuriated, he lets on that he had an agreement with Jinchuan previously. | ||

| Qiumei received news that the vessel that Tianshui was aboard had sunk in the Japan waters. Tianshui's name was found on the list amongst those that had drowned. Qiumei announced her intention to marry Tianshui as his corpse bride. Qiumei was adamant to go ahead with the marriage despite everyone's disapproval. On the day of the wedding ceremony, Tianshui suddenly appeared, surprising everyone. | ||
