House of Bishops

The membership of the General Synod's House of Bishops is:[178]

  • All 42 bishops diocesan (or as many as are in post)
  • The Bishop suffragan of Dover (as a quasi-diocesan bishop; Trevor Willmott; since 2010) and the Bishop to the Forces (Tim Thornton, Bishop at Lambeth; since 2017)
  • 9 bishops suffragan (5 from Canterbury province; 4 from York) elected by and from among all the bishops suffragan.
The following have been elected to serve in the Convocations for 2015–2020:[179]
  1. Pete Broadbent, area Bishop of Willesden (since 2001)
  2. Jonathan Meyrick, Bishop suffragan of Lynn (since 2013)
  3. Jonathan Gibbs, area Bishop of Huddersfield (since 2015)
  4. Alistair Magowan, Bishop suffragan of Ludlow (since 2015)
  5. Jonathan Frost, Bishop suffragan of Southampton (since 2015)
  6. Jonathan Baker, Bishop suffragan of Fulham (since 2015)
  7. Glyn Webster, Bishop suffragan of Beverley (since 2015)
  8. Libby Lane, Bishop suffragan of Stockport (since 2015)
  9. One vacancy (by Blackburn's retirement), pending a by-election
The following suffragans have also served during this quinquennium:
  • Richard Blackburn, Bishop suffragan of Warrington (2015–2018)

Acting diocesan bishops (commissaries) also attend but do not vote (unless they happen to hold a vote as an elected representative suffragan) at meetings of the House.[180]

The four "provincial episcopal visitors" (the Bishops suffragan of Richborough, of Ebbsfleet, of Maidstone and of Beverley) may attend and speak, but are not members and may not vote — unless they are elected as representative suffragans,[178] as Beverley has been since 2015.

It was announced in June 2016 that the "participant observers" arrangement would be replaced from 1 December 2016 with an arrangement whereby six female bishops suffragan would be "[given] rights of attendance".[181] They are:[178]

  1. Alison White, Bishop suffragan of Hull
  2. Ruth Worsley, Bishop suffragan of Taunton
  3. Anne Hollinghurst, Bishop suffragan of Aston
  4. Karen Gorham, Bishop suffragan of Sherborne
  5. Jan McFarlane, Bishop suffragan of Repton
  6. one vacancy, following Sarah Mullally's confirmation as Bishop of London

These six were — whether by design or otherwise — the six senior by appointment (saving Lane, being a Member of the House). There are three other suffragans.
