Light aircraft pilot licence

Light aircraft pilot licence (LAPL) is a pilot license allowing the pilot to fly small aircraft in Europe. The requirements, skill tests, and privileges differ from those of the PPL.[1] The rules and requirements for the license have been approved by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), published in the Official Journal of the European Union[2] and is currently in the process of being implemented by the member states.

The LAPL will ensure a unified approach to light aircraft pilot licenses across Europe, unlike the Ultralight license schemes currently in force, which are national rules that vary between member states.

Recency requirements[3]

To use his licence, an LAPL holder needs to justify in the last 24 months as pilot of an aeroplane or TMG:

  • 12 hours of flight time as PIC, including 12 take-offs and landings
  • refresher training of at least 1 hour of total flight time with an instructor
