Leslie White (born 1920 – death unknown), also known by the nickname of "Les", was an English professional rugby league footballer of the 1940s and 1950s. He played at representative level for Great Britain, England, and Yorkshire, and at club level for York, Wigan, and Halifax, as a prop, or second-row, i.e. number 8 or 10, or 11 or 12, during the era of contested scrums.[1] White was also a gunner in the British Army during World War II.[4]

Playing career

International honours

Les White won caps for England while at York in 1946 against France (2 matches), and Wales (2 matches), in 1947 against France (2 matches), and Wales, while at Wigan in 1947 against Wales, in 1948 against France, and while at Halifax in 1951 against Wales,[2] and won caps for Great Britain while at York in 1946 against Australia (3 matches), and New Zealand, and while at Wigan in 1947 against New Zealand (2 matches).[3]

Challenge Cup Final appearances

Les White played left-second-row, i.e. number 11, in Wigan's 8-3 victory over Bradford Northern in the 1948 Challenge Cup Final during the 1947–48 season at Wembley Stadium, London on Saturday 1 May 1948, in front of a crowd of 91,465.[5]

County Cup Final appearances

Les White played left-second-row, i.e. number 11, in Wigan's 10-7 victory over Belle Vue Rangers in the 1947 Lancashire County Cup Final during the 1947–48 season at Wilderspool Stadium, Warrington on Saturday 1 November 1947.[6]

Other notable games

Les White played right-prop, i.e. number 10, for Northern Command XIII against a Rugby League XIII at Thrum Hall, Halifax on Saturday 21 March 1942.[4] Coincidentally, he played alongside another Les White.
